Abandoned by his father and angered by being raised in abject poverty and prejudice in the Deep South in the 1950s, ten-year-old Williams experiences the complexity of racial relationships when his mother, Lissie, marries an itinerant white preacher named James Vaughn.
Succumbing to the pressure of church elders, Vaughn and Lissie, along with young Donnie, relocate to California where Williams feels increasingly alienated from and angry toward white society. After joining a racist gang and dropping out of school, he enlists in the military and is shipped to Vietnam where he begins training in karate.
While in the military, Williams continues to perceive his world as “black” and “white” and by the time he is discharged has become a full-blown racist obsessed with one burning desire—to become the deadliest karate practitioner in the world.

Becoming world champion does not unfold as he has envisioned. In 1977, an exhausted and out-of-shape Williams barely survives a full day of competition. Minutes before the championship match, Williams, injured and overwhelmed by despair, kneels in front of a toilet at the Long Beach Sports Arena and prays to God for help. When God intervenes and unshackles Williams from a lifetime of hatred that has negatively impacted how he wrongly perceived his world, Williams promises to serve God for the rest of his days.
Today Donnie Williams is a radically transformed man, one who has moved from negative thoughts and actions to one who feels connected to himself, to God, and to the human race.
